Few details survive about this view beyond its title, "Ethel Chas., Atlantic City," which the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve; the cataloguers note that the title is unverified. The image is a 4 by 5 inch glass negative dated to about 1921, when Atlantic City was a major Jersey Shore resort known for its boardwalk, hotels and bathing crowds. The company, active from the early 1900s into the 1920s, documented American towns and landmarks for sale as postcards and prints. Visible streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
