The joke is in the title: a plain wedding band stands guard over the engagement ring, a playful reminder that marriage is meant to outlast courtship. Stereo cards like this were produced in large numbers in the first decade of the 1900s, when parlor viewers used a stereoscope to fuse two nearly identical photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. This one was issued by the Sterro-Photo Co. of Dolgeville, a small village in upstate New York, and carries a copyright notice in the name of C.A. Richmond.
