Its title, "Trapshooter's #2," points to a single oil well, the kind of derrick and lease that dotted the El Dorado, Kansas, field during its boom. Oil was discovered in the Butler County area in 1915, and within a few years the town drew wildcatters, drillers, and supply firms, turning farmland into a crowded patchwork of rigs and storage tanks. The photograph was made around 1917 by C.O. Boston and registered for copyright, which is why a record of it survives. Pictures like this one document the rough, fast-moving industry that reshaped the region in the years before the First World War ended.
