Father Charles E. Coughlin, the Detroit radio priest whose broadcasts reached millions of listeners in the 1930s, is the figure at the center of this 1936 photograph taken during one of his public appearances in Boston. By that year Coughlin had built one of the largest audiences in American radio, and his weekly addresses had grown increasingly critical of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. His rallies drew large, enthusiastic crowds, and images like this one document how his movement took its message directly to city audiences beyond the airwaves.
