The title promises "the celebrated Ethiopian melodies" of Boston minstrels, and the sheet music cover ties the image to the popular blackface stage of the mid-nineteenth century. Minstrel troupes used "Ethiopian" as a label for their acts, which cast white performers in burnt-cork makeup as caricatured Black characters. Publisher C.G. Christman of New York issued the lithograph, and its subjects, dandies and minstrel shows, point to a stage style that shaped popular music and humor for decades. Today the imagery is a record of racist entertainment, and it is valuable mainly as evidence of how that culture was marketed.
