Mill Boy and Blondine, trotting horses owned and driven by John Shepard, are the celebrated pair shown here, and the title credits them with a record time of 2:22 for the mile. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published the lithograph sometime between 1882 and 1890, produced many portraits of famous trotters during the years when harness racing drew large crowds. Prints like this one helped make such horses household names, and the record time in the title marks the speed that earned them that attention.
