John L. Sullivan, the bare-knuckle and later gloved heavyweight who became the first widely recognized modern boxing champion, was born in Boston on October 15, 1858, and this print presents him with the swagger his fame required. Trade cards and lithographs like this one were a common way for 19th-century audiences to follow prizefighters, whose bouts were often illegal and reported in newspapers only after the fact. Sullivan's Boston roots gave the city a claim on his celebrity, and the color treatment of such portraits reflects the commercial boom in chromolithography that made hero images affordable to ordinary buyers.
