Gary, Indiana, in 1910 was a city only about three years old, founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The company had chosen the site for its access to lake shipping and rail lines, and its mills along the lakefront were already drawing thousands of workers, many of them immigrants from Central and Southern Europe. The city grew quickly around the plant, with housing, streetcars and schools laid out to serve a labor force that worked long shifts in the furnaces and rolling mills. This panorama shows the works as the town's residents would have known them: the mill was the city's economic heart and the source of both its jobs and its smoke.
