A single stock reply is the joke in this wood engraving, "The Centennial Police – Their universal answer," which ran in Harper's Weekly on June 10, 1876. It appeared a few weeks after the Centennial International Exhibition opened in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park on May 10 to mark the nation's hundredth year. Crowds that summer were large, and illustrated weeklies often poked fun at visitors, the fair's bustle and the officials trying to keep order. The record does not name the artist, so the drawing itself is the best guide to the cartoon's target.
