Mineral Wells, in Palo Pinto County in north-central Texas, was in 1906 a town built largely on its reputation as a health resort. Its mineral water, pumped from wells drilled in the 1880s, was sold and bathed in for the treatment of digestive and nervous ailments, and visitors came by rail from across Texas and neighboring states. Bathhouses, boarding houses, and hotels lined the streets near the wells, and the local economy depended on the seasonal crowds as much as on the surrounding ranches and farms. West Mountain, the hill that gives this view its name, rose above a town where the spa trade shaped daily life, from the hotel staff and well keepers to the merchants who supplied the visitors.
