Mineral Wells, the seat of Palo Pinto County in north central Texas, was in 1906 a town built largely on its mineral water. Drillers struck the carbonated springs in the early 1880s while searching for other resources, and by the first decade of the new century visitors were arriving by rail to drink and bathe in the waters for their health. Bathhouses, boarding houses and hotels crowded the streets near the wells, and the local economy leaned on this health-seeking trade alongside ranching and farming in the surrounding countryside. From East Mountain, the view takes in a community whose residents knew it chiefly as a place of cures and visitors.
