Wells, Texas, in 1917 was a farming community in the piney woods of East Texas, where families earned their living from cotton, corn, and timber. The Fairview Church was one of the community's main gathering places, hosting Sunday services, revivals, singing gatherings, and the dinners on the grounds that brought neighboring families together. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and news of the fighting and of local men preparing for service would have reached rural households through county newspapers and word of mouth. Roads were mostly unpaved and travel was done by wagon, horseback, or on foot, so a church building was often the most familiar public structure a family knew.
