Texas in 1917 was in the middle of rapid change. Cotton still anchored the farm economy, and oil fields opened after Spindletop in 1901 were reshaping towns from the Gulf Coast northward. Railroads moved cattle, cotton and lumber to market, and local life centered on merchants, landowners and churches. After the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, Texas towns sent young men to training camps and bought Liberty Bonds. This panoramic view of the Millheisler group reflects the close-knit communities that carried these changes.
