Washington and His Family" shifts attention from the monument's public stature to the household around him. In 1759 Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow, and together they raised her two children from her first marriage, John Parke Custis and Martha "Patsy" Custis, at Mount Vernon in Virginia. Washington had no children of his own, so the home that scenes like this one depict was a blended family. Images of him with relatives grew popular in the decades after his death, as the public sought a more personal picture of the man behind the nation's founding.
