Fatima cigarettes gave this card its name and the T222 catalog number that collectors use for the 1914 series. The American Tobacco Company packed cards like this into cigarette packs to encourage repeat purchases and give buyers something to collect, and they served as small portraits of players of the day. The Library's record notes that the title was devised by its staff, so the name is a cataloging label, not text printed on the card. This example survives as a gelatin silver print, a photographic process that holds more tonal detail than the cheap lithographed cards most collectors know.
