Labeled only as the Boston American League club, this team portrait comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made for the Bain News Service in New York. The club is the Boston Red Sox, who won the 1915 World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies, and that roster included a young pitcher named George Herman Ruth, later known as Babe Ruth. Bain's photographers worked for newspapers and magazines, so pictures like this were meant to be reproduced and captioned quickly for readers following the game. The record gives only an approximate date of about 1915, but that year falls within Boston's early championship run.
