Hot Springs, Arkansas, was a popular spring-training destination for major league clubs in the early 1900s, drawn by its warm mineral baths and mild winter weather. This photograph, taken around 1910 and part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, shows Boston players at the resort town during that tradition. Bain was a news photographer whose agency sold pictures to newspapers, so images like this one were made to be printed quickly alongside stories of the season ahead. The scene gives a sense of how teams prepared for the year away from the northern cold, when a lot of training was as much about conditioning and camaraderie as about drills.
