Here the cheer is for Franklin D. Roosevelt, not Theodore Roosevelt, the namesake of this gallery board, and the setting is a Civilian Conservation Corps work camp in what is now Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Franklin Roosevelt created the CCC in 1933 as one of the first major New Deal programs, putting young men to work on reforestation, trail building and fire control during the Depression. This Associated Press photo, dated August 12, 1933, captures a public appearance at a time when the park was still taking shape from land assembled in the Blue Ridge.
