This print shows John Nepomucene Neumann, identified in its title as a Right Reverend and a member of the Redemptorist order, whose initials appear after his name. Neumann, born in Bohemia, came to the United States as a missionary priest in 1836 and worked among German-speaking Catholic immigrants in New York and Pennsylvania. He was named bishop of Philadelphia in 1852, and he is remembered for building parish schools. The Catholic Church canonized him in 1977, making him the first male saint from the United States. The record does not give a date, but the notation that it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office suggests it was issued for public distribution.
