A small figure in a military uniform, riding in a coach shaped like a walnut shell, makes this 1880 poster stand out from the usual theatrical bills of its day. Waters & Son printed the sheet in color from woodcut blocks, a method that gave showmen bold shapes and strong colors visible from across a street. Exhibitions of performers of unusual size, many touring with showmen such as P. T. Barnum, drew large crowds in the 1800s, and posters like this one promised spectacle at a glance. The record does not name the performer, and the title was supplied by cataloguers, so the act is best understood as part of that popular tradition.
