Ada Gray, who performed from 1834 to 1902, is the star of this 1894 color lithograph advertising her in *East Lynne*, the melodrama adapted from Mrs. Henry Wood's popular 1861 novel. The story of a wife who returns in disguise to see the children she was forced to leave became a staple of nineteenth-century stages, and its tearful reunions gave lead actresses a showcase for emotional range. The poster's subject tags point to an embrace between adults and children, the sort of scene audiences came to expect from the play. The sheet was printed in Chicago by the Gribler Bank Note Company.
