Few stage names of the 1890s were as well known as Herrmann the Great, and this sheet advertises his company at the Manhattan theater on Broadway at 33rd Street in New York. Printed in black and white by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati and New York firm that produced many touring theater posters of the period, it carries the caption "The Chore Boy" beneath the title. Herrmann's entertainments were built on magic and illusion, which drew large audiences to American theaters at the turn of the century, and posters like this one were a principal way touring companies caught the eye of passersby.
