The poster's most distinctive detail is its credit line, "Jno. A. Himmelein sole owner," printed alongside the Imperial Stock Co. and the play title "The Ideals." Stock companies of the late 1800s were touring or resident troupes that staged a rotating repertoire, and their posters were pasted up in advance along main streets and rail towns to draw audiences. This sheet was printed in 1899 by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, a firm that produced many color lithographs for theatrical clients.
