This glass negative records a view labeled "Agrl. Dept." in Washington, D.C., with a title that the National Photo Company wrote on the negative and that has not been independently verified. The Department of Agriculture's buildings grew up along the city's central mall during the early twentieth century, when federal offices were expanding. The National Photo Company made many views of Washington for postcards and tourist sales in the years before the 1920s, so the negative reflects how the capital was presented to visitors then. Its glass base has also developed streaks and other blemishes from the deterioration of its original coatings.
