In 1927 Ann Arbor was a university town of roughly 20,000 residents, with the University of Michigan at its center and the automobile boom of Detroit about 40 miles to the east shaping much of the region's money and jobs. That year the university opened a new stadium on the campus, a concrete and steel bowl built to hold the football crowds that had outgrown Ferry Field. Fielding Yost, the longtime football coach and athletic director, had pushed for the project, and its construction was financed largely by ticket sales and the football program. Its opening in October 1927 gave Michigan one of the largest stadiums in the country and made the autumn game day a central social event for students, alumni, and townspeople alike.
