In 1905 Ann Arbor was a college town of roughly fourteen thousand people in southeastern Michigan, with the University of Michigan at its center and students and faculty shaping much of daily life. The university had grown steadily since the Civil War, drawing students from across the state and beyond, and its needs supported local boarding houses, shops, and the building trades. Freight from the Huron River valley's farms and mills moved out on the Michigan Central and Ann Arbor Railroad lines toward Detroit and Chicago, while an electric interurban line linked the town to Detroit and Toledo. Residents also knew Ann Arbor for its German and farm families who had settled the surrounding countryside and for the rhythms of campus life, from football crowds to commencement week.
