Florence in 1909 was a city that lived on its past and on the travelers who came to see it. The Ponte Vecchio, the stone bridge that crosses the Arno, has carried shops over the river since the medieval period, and by then its jewelers and goldsmiths had long replaced the butchers who first set up stalls there. The Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 to link the Uffizi with the Pitti Palace across the bridge's upper level, still ran above the shopfronts. Florence had been the capital of a unified Italy only from 1865 to 1871, and by the early twentieth century its economy leaned on tourism, artisan trades, and the English and American residents who wintered there. Visitors crossing the bridge in 1909 would have seen the river, the old goldsmiths' windows, and a city whose main business was looking after its history.
