Here Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Science movement, is shown holding a young child, a more intimate subject than the formal portraits she is often remembered by. The caption card gives no date and does not name the child, and the record is unverified, so the circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain. Eddy published *Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures* in 1875 and went on to lead a church that spread across the United States, which makes a personal image like this one a useful counterpoint to her public role.
