Thomas Lynch Jr. was one of South Carolina's delegates to the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, though poor health soon forced him to leave public life. This engraving by James Barton Longacre was published in 1824 as an illustration in John Sanderson's multivolume *Biography of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence*, a series that paired each signer's likeness with a short life story. Lynch died at sea in 1779 while traveling to Europe with his wife, and the ship was never heard from again. Longacre later became chief engraver at the U.S. Mint, a career that began with engravings like this one.
