Thomas Paine appears here as a sitter in his own right, rendered by the engraver William Sharp after a 1792 painting by George Romney. The print appeared in London around 1794, a period when Paine's writings had made him one of the most controversial figures in Britain. His *Rights of Man* defended the French Revolution and attacked hereditary monarchy, and in 1792 he was prosecuted in absentia for seditious libel and fled to France. Engravings like this one carried his likeness to readers who could not see the original, and they show how quickly a radical author's face became a symbol in the public debate.
