Thomas Paine appears here in a small etched portrait from the 1790s, a period when his writings had made him one of the most talked-about figures on both sides of the Atlantic. Paine (1737-1809) was an English-born political writer whose pamphlets, including "Common Sense" (1776) and "The Rights of Man" (1791), helped fuel the American and French revolutions. Portraits like this one circulated widely in that era, when the faces of controversial authors were sold as cheap prints to readers eager to see the man behind the arguments.
