Engraver T. A. Dean reproduced George Romney's 1792 painting of Thomas Paine, the author of *Common Sense* and *Rights of Man*. Those writings made Paine both celebrated and unwelcome in Britain, where his defense of revolution drew prosecution in the early 1790s. John Brooks published the print in London and dated it November 23, 1830, more than two decades after Paine's death in 1809, when radical readers were revisiting his career. The title line credits Romney as the painter and Dean as the engraver.
