Benjamin Rush, the Philadelphia physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence, is the sitter here, rendered in a finely cut engraving by the printmaker William Haines. Rush was among the most prominent medical men of the early American republic. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania, served as Surgeon General of the Continental Army's middle department, and is remembered for his advocacy of humane treatment of the mentally ill and for his work on public health during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The caption card gives no date, so the plate's exact year is unrecorded, though engravings of notable Philadelphians were widely circulated in the decades after independence.
