This print reproduces a painting of Cardinal Michele Bonelli, a churchman of the late 1500s who was known as the Cardinal Alessandrino after the Piedmontese city of Alessandria, the see associated with his title. He was a nephew of Pope Pius V, who elevated him to the cardinalate in 1566 while he was still very young, and his career was shaped by that papal patronage. The image appeared in the Italian illustrated magazine Cosmos illustrato in 1904, which suggests the original portrait was of interest to the period's readers. The record does not name the original painter, so the reproduction is best read as a record of how the cardinal was remembered.
