Taken around 1890, this view of Liberty Island in New York Harbor shows the site a few years after the Statue of Liberty was dedicated there in October 1886. The print carries a copyright notice in the name of S.R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, New York, whose studio produced many views of American places. The statue was a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and given its inner iron framework by Gustave Eiffel's firm, and it stood on a pedestal built largely with American donations. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
