Congress Hall in Philadelphia, then the seat of the federal government, is the setting for this scene of George Washington's second inauguration in 1793. J.L.G. Ferris painted the original, and this color halftone reproduces it as part of The Foundation Press's Pageant of a Nation series, issued in Cleveland around 1947. Because the library classes it as a conjectural work, the scene reflects how later artists imagined the event, not a record made on the day, so the carriages and crowds show the period's ideas about the occasion as much as its actual details.
