This lithograph is a United States Fuel Administration poster, number 2 in its series, designed by J.C. Leyendecker and printed in Chicago by Edwards & Deutsch in 1918. It urged households to order their winter coal early, when wartime demand, strained railroads, and a severe coal shortage made deliveries uncertain. The Fuel Administration, led by Harry Garfield, used posters like this to ask Americans to conserve fuel and plan ahead. The subject is a horse-drawn coal wagon, a reminder that home heating depended on a delivery system that still ran on animal power.
