Titled for a horse named Black Cloud, this chromolithograph shows the animal standing in a stable, a setting chosen to present the horse as a valued possession. The record credits Scott Leighton with the design and E.K. Dunbar with the 1882 copyright, which places the print in the period when color lithography was cheap enough to reach ordinary homes, saloons and stables. Portraits of named horses were popular with owners and sporting men of the 1880s, who often displayed them as tributes to favorite animals. The print is a useful example of how commercial color printing carried the horse's image well beyond the racetrack.
