The troop of black horses at Culver Military Academy sets this picture apart from the other horse photographs on the board: the academy, a military school on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee in northern Indiana, drilled its mounted cavalry on horses matched in color, and the uniform, horse and rider together made a strong visual subject. The record gives no date, but the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds news photographs mainly from the early twentieth century, when cavalry drill still stood at the center of many military schools' training. The title comes from the Bain News Service's own notes and has not been independently verified.
