Broadway runs south through the middle of Saratoga Springs, and this view shows the street as a visitor would have seen it around 1904. The town grew up around its mineral springs and became a fashionable summer resort in the 19th century, and Broadway was its commercial spine, lined with hotels, shops and boarding houses that catered to seasonal crowds. The Detroit Publishing Company made large-format views like this one of American towns and scenic places for travel books and postcards, so the picture reflects how the company presented resort life to a national audience. Its glass plate negative preserves fine detail in the street and buildings.
