Taken in 1865, this view shows the almshouse in Richmond, Virginia, recorded as a stereograph: two glass negatives made to be seen side by side for a three-dimensional effect. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, made the wet collodion plates in the months when Union forces occupied the Confederate capital after its fall in April 1865. Almshouses were public institutions that housed the poor, elderly, and sick, and images like this one document the city's civic buildings and everyday institutions as the war ended and Richmond began to rebuild.
