The single word "Free!" serves as the title of this color lithograph, issued as one card in an album called "The Slave in 1863," published in Philadelphia that year. The date places it in the months after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, when the question of what freedom would mean for enslaved people was being argued in newspapers and public meetings across the North. Collecting cards like these were sold and traded as small illustrated pieces of popular entertainment and opinion, so the card reflects how the war and emancipation reached ordinary households. Its copyright line names William A. Stephens, the publisher or artist credited on the set.
