Make way for liberty!" survives as a small color lithograph issued as a collecting card, one of a set published in Philadelphia in 1863 under the series heading "The slave in 1863." The card carries William A. Stephens's copyright line, and its numbering shows it was meant to be gathered into an album alongside related cards. The date matters: the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, and Black men were being recruited into Union regiments that year, a shift the title's call to clear a path for freedom seems to reflect. Cards like this one let Northern publishers comment on the war and emancipation for a broad, everyday audience.
