Titled simply "Victory!", this small color lithograph is card no. 11 in a Philadelphia series published in 1863 under the heading "The Slave in 1863," and it is one of the few pictures in this group that shows Black soldiers in a military setting. The Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, and that year the Union began enlisting Black men in large numbers, including regiments such as the 54th Massachusetts. Cards like this one were sold as collectibles, so their images mixed news of the war with the popular humor and sentiment of the period. The record credits William A. Stephens with the copyright.
