Hiding in a swamp is the subject of this small color lithograph, one of the collecting cards issued in Philadelphia in 1863 under the series title *The Slave in 1863*. William A. Stephens, who holds the copyright, published the set as caricature, a style that mocked Black people and emancipation for a white audience that wanted to laugh at the war's upheaval. For people who fled bondage, swamps and marshes offered cover but also hunger, cold, and the constant threat of recapture. The card is worth studying for how it turns that danger into a joke, which says as much about its audience as about its subject.
