Titled "The Lash," this color lithograph shows the whipping of an enslaved person, a subject the record ties to the Subjects heading on punishment and torture. It was issued as No. 5 in a numbered series of collecting cards, the third album variety, printed in Philadelphia in 1863 under the series name "The Slave in 1863" and copyrighted by William A. Stephens. Small illustrated cards like these were widely collected in the 1860s, and this one was made during the Civil War, when slavery and emancipation were central questions in American public life. Its wartime date and the series title place it within that contested moment, and the image is worth reading alongside the sources that explain how such cards were meant to be understood.
