Published in Philadelphia in 1863, this color lithograph titled *The Sale* is numbered 59 in a series called *The Slave in 1863*, issued as part of an album of collecting cards. Its subject, an auction of enslaved people, places it within the long history of the domestic slave trade, which had operated across the South for decades. The print appeared the same year the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, when the nation's war was increasingly about slavery itself. Stephens, who registered the copyright, produced it as one of many images that brought the realities of slavery to a northern audience during the Civil War.
