The Christmas week" is one of a set of color lithographs issued in Philadelphia in 1863 under the title *The Slave in 1863*, copyrighted by William A. Stephens. It shows a holiday dance, a scene the record ties to Christmas and to the social life of African Americans in the period before emancipation. The print appeared in the same year the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, so its date places it in the middle of the Civil War. Viewers should read it with care, since lithographs of this kind were often made for mass audiences and can carry the assumptions and stereotypes of their time.
