Numbered 57 in a series of collecting cards, this color lithograph shows enslaved workers in a cotton field, the crop that drove the plantation economy of the American South before the Civil War. It was published in Philadelphia in 1863 under the series title *The Slave in 1863*, the same year the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in areas still in rebellion. Like many prints of its kind, it was made for a Northern market of album collectors, so it shows how the wartime North chose to picture slavery, often through stereotype rather than the workers' own perspective.
