Blow for blow" is a color lithograph issued as a numbered collecting card, part of a series titled "The Slave in 1863" and published in Philadelphia that year. Its catalog subjects are slave rebellions and beating, themes the series took up at a time when the Civil War had made slavery's future the central question in the country. The card carries a copyright notice in the name of William A. Stephens, and its date places it in the same year President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Viewers should keep the period's racial assumptions in mind, since many wartime lithographs of this kind used caricature to comment on enslaved and free Black Americans.
